(10/08) Die zwischen 1978 und 1981 aktive Formation MAGAZINE ist eine der personell interessantesten und musikalisch spannendsten Bands der gesamten englischen Punk/Wave-Szenerie.
Bassist Barry Adamson, danach auch noch bei Nick Cave's Bad Seeds aktiv, machte in den 90ern Furore als Komponist für reale und imaginative Filme.
Gitarrist John McGeoch, leider 2004 schon früh verstorben, war später die zentrale Instrumental-Figur bei Siouxsie & The Banshees.
Die beiden eben genannten Musiker und Keyboarder Dave Formula bildeten parallel zum MAGAZINE-Dasein 1980 das Band-Rückgrat für Steve Strange's Visage.
Howard Devoto schließlich hatte seinen ersten step to fame bereits Anfang 1977 absolviert, als Mitbegründer der Buzzcocks und Sänger auf deren erster EP "Spiral Scratch".
Er war bei MAGAZINE vokaler Fixpunkt, Lieferant oft kyptischer Texte und inhaltlicher Konzeptgeber.
Unter seiner Regie bewegte sich die Band, durchaus Bowie- und Roxy Music-beeinflusst, vom Post-Punk mit zeitweiligem Pop-Appeal auf dem ersten Longplayer zum bizarr-kunstvollen Art Pop/Rock auf den 3 Nachfolge-Alben.
Dieser stilistische Entwicklungsprozess ist auch bei den "Complete John Peel Sessions" nachzuvollziehen (4 Stück, 78 bis 80, gab's schon mal in einer kleinen Box, jetzt erstmals separat), wobei hier unter Live-Bedingungen natürlich noch eine ganz andere Power verströmt wird.
