(10/02) Das kongeniale Duo mit seinem ersten gemeinsamen Album seit 18 Jahren. Soft Cell, eines der erfolgreichsten und einflussreichsten Popduos der letzten zwei Dekaden, sind zurück. 1980 in Leeds von den beiden Kunststudenten Marc Almond und Dave Ball gegründet, fanden Soft Cell schnell zu einem eigenen Stil, den die Times einmal treffend mit den Worten "Suicide meets Judy Garland" beschrieb. Das nun vorliegende Album "Cruelty Without Beauty" macht unmissverständlich klar, dass hier etwas fortgeführt wird, das vor achtzehn Jahren ein so jähes Ende gefunden hatte. Frisch und upgedatet knüpft die Produktion nahtlos an all das an, wofür Soft Cell immer standen: euphorische Dancefloor-Stomper, inszeniert als Bühne für aufwühlende Gefühlsverwirrungen und aufreizende sexual politics. Während der Opener "Darker Times" und das wunderbar leichte "Last Chance" an den jugendlichen Charme ihrer größten Hits erinnern, treiben Soft Cell mit "Le Grand Guignol" und "Caligula Syndrome" ihre Affinität für das Dunkle und Bizarre einmal mehr auf die Spitze. Die erste Singleauskopplung "Monoculture" dürfte bald die Tanzflure der Nacht rocken, und mit "The Night" haben sich Soft Cell wieder einmal einen Northern Soul Stormer auf unnachahmliche Weise angeeignet.
